A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who has received specialty training in diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.


A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed medical school and psychiatry specialty training, including training in the use of talk therapy and medications. A psychologist is a professional who received a graduate degree in psychology and is qualified to provide talk therapy. As medical doctors, psychiatrists are able to read and interpret medical records.

Psychiatrists are licensed to practice medicine. A nurse practitioner is a nurse who has completed additional nursing coursework and is licensed by a nursing board, not a medical board.
